Room noise changes everything. A quiet studio makes Balanced work well. A noisy café may never go below threshold, so “silence” is never detected — you will save little time. In that case use manual Audio Trim or fix the recording environment first.

Minimum silence length

Min gap (for example 0.5s) tells the filter to ignore short breaths and micro-pauses. If you set 0.2s, more gaps disappear and speech can sound choppy. If you set 1.5s, only long dead air is removed. Podcast tighteners often live between 0.4s and 0.8s.

Zero padding glues the end of one sentence to the start of the next. Humans expect a small amount of air. Leaving 50–150 ms after a cut usually sounds more natural than a hard butt-edit on every gap.

FFmpeg’s silenceremove filter scans the decoded audio for regions below a threshold for at least a given duration.
